This program recognises the importance of chemistry in industry and our environment, and provides a framework for intellectual inquiry and a means of helping improve people’s lives. The program provides a strong background in the key topic areas of contemporary chemistry, including core studies in analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, practical laboratory skills and applications in contemporary research, industry and the environment.
A research project is available to students in the final year of the degree. You may take units from other areas of science, including majors or sub-majors, or combine your core studies in chemistry with units from a non-science discipline, opening up a range of alternate career directions. For example, a major in geochemistry will prepare you for a career in the minerals and mining industries, and a sub-major in biochemistry or microbiology will prepare you for a career in the pharmaceutical, health or food industries.

A double major or sub-major with biochemistry and molecular biology or microbiology will prepare you for a career in the pharmaceutical, health or food industries. Alternatively, graduates who elect studies in the physical sciences, mathematics or business are well placed for careers in the manufacturing industry. Other areas of employment include research and development, chemical, environmental and forensic analysis, scientific and technical sales, and consumer affairs.
