Equity and personal disadvantage groups

Applicants who have applied under one or more of the following equity or personal disadvantage groups must supply the following documentation.

People from rural andisolated areas

This category is for applicants who live or have lived in a rural or isolated area of Australia.  Applicants should refer to the Australian Standard Geographic Classification remoteness areas classification list to determine whether they live (or have lived) in a rural or isolated area. This classification is categorised into:

  • major cities
  • inner regional
  • outer regional
  • remote
  • very remote

Applicants who live or have lived in any of these areas except the major citiescategory will be considered as rural and isolated.

Applicants are not required to submit supporting documentation for this category and will be assessed based on the postcode listed in their scholarship application.

People experiencing low socio-economic circumstances

Low socio-economic background - Centrelink benefits

Applicants may authorise UWS to obtain details ofCentrelink benefits via electronic means by providing their Customer Reference Number (CRN) as part of the online application. Applicants who provide their CRN in the applicationare not required to supply additional documentation for this category.

Applicants who do not provide their CRN in the application are required to provide the following:

  • A certified copy of a letter from Centrelink showing your personal details, type and amount of Centrelink benefits and/or payments received, and/or
  • A certifiedcopy of your current Health Care Card or Government Pension Card.

Note: a Medicare card is not a Centrelink benefit.

Low socio-economic background - No Centrelink benefits

Applicants will need to provide statements in their application explaining their financial circumstances and theeffect it has on their education.

Applicants under this category must also provide one of the following documents:

  • an ATO Notice of Financial Assessment for theprevious year; or
  • if you are living with your parent/s (or with a partner) you must also provide evidence of your parent/s (or partner’s) income. i.e. ATO Notice ofFinancial Assessment in the previous year; or
  • if you don't receive a Centrelink Income Support Benefit we need to be provided with evidence that you are in financial hardship in the form of a Statutory Declaration
  • People with a disability or long term medical condition

Applicants who have a long-term or recurrent medical condition or illness, or a physical, learning, or another type of disability must provide details and demonstrate howthe medical condition or disability has affected their education in their scholarship application.

All applicants must also provide:

  • A confidential statement ofsupport completed by a relevant health care professional who is familiar with your case (the health care professional cannot be related to you), OR
  • A letter from UWS’sStudent Equity & Welfare Services Officer or UWS Disability Officer

People from a non-English speaking background

Applicants must provide certified copies of the pages in your passport showing the following:

  • your personaldetails
  • country of origin
  • year of arrival (must be after 1999)
  • entry visa details/stamps of arrival.

People experiencing long term family difficulties

Applicants are required to submit a statement as part of their application describing the nature of difficult familycircumstances as well as demonstrate that the circumstances have significantly affected their education.
