References to ISI/Impact Factors/Citation Indexes are essentially referring to the same thing - indexes that track the extent of citation of a journal article. The higher the rate of citation, the higher the impact factor.
The ISI, the most widely used index, is operated by a commercial company, draws its data largely from science journals and has a strong North American orientation. Journals in the Arts and Humanities, especially in Australia, have very limited representation.
By selectively indexing core academic journals in specific disciplines, citation indexes enable you to find out where an article has been cited subsequent to its publication. A research trail can be followed forward from the year an article is published.
Citation searches do not provide an absolute measure of the quality of the cited paper as a poor quality paper may be frequently cited but critically.
All ISI’s citation indexes can be searched online in Web of Science. The Web of Science is part of ISI’s Web of Knowledge, a research portal which also provides access to the current awareness database Current Contents Connect and Journal Citation Reports.
Science Citation Index (SCI)
SCI covers approximately 5900 of the world’s leading science and technology journals.
Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)
SSCI indexes 1800 of the world’s leading social science journals in a broad range of disciplines. It also covers individually selected, relevant items from more than 5800 of the world’s leading natural and physical science journals.
Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI)
AHCI comprehensively references over 1130 of the world’s leading arts and humanities journals. Over 7000 science and social science journals are indexed selectively.
