Examination Results

The following outcomes are recommended after examination.

(A) That the degree be awarded
The examiner may recommend this category for a thesis which satisfies the requirements for the degree and which does not need to be amended.

R) That the candidate be required to undertake rewriting (as identified by the examiners) to the satisfaction of the Supervisory Panel and the College Research and Higher Degrees Committee before the degree is awarded
The examiners should specify this category for a thesis where the rewriting involves more than editorial corrections. The candidate may have to rework some sections and make modifications to the thesis. Additional material may be required. The candidate may also be asked to attend to editorial corrections.

(X) That the candidate be required to revise and resubmit the thesis for further examination within a specified time
Is only available for the initial examination of the thesis.  A re-examination under option X will be conducted in the basis of specific advice given to the candidate on what must be achieved in rewriting.  The specific instructions to the candidate for rewriting for re-examination will be approved by the Research Studies Committee.

The rewriting instructions will be written by the supervisory panel and endorsed by the College Associate Dean, Research. These instructions will be provided to the examiner for the re-examination as they will form the basis of the second examination.

No new criticisms may be introduced by the examiner in the second examination. The examiner(s) who recommended that the thesis be re-examined shall be invited to undertake the re-examination.

Under Option F the Research Studies Committee may recommend resubmission for a research masters award. The work may have to be rewritten before it is submitted for examination at research masters level.

(F) That the degree not be awarded
The examiner should not recommend this category for a thesis when a limited amount of additional work or modification could raise the thesis to an acceptable standard. This category is to be used when, clearly, the candidate has demonstrated that he or she has not presented sufficient evidence to warrant the award of the degree. The examiner is requested to detail fully the reasons for this recommendation.

The thesis may be submitted for a lesser degree.
