UWS Sustainable Campus Project

UWS is a signatory to the Talloires Declaration which declares its commitment to environmental sustainability in higher education.

UWS already has a wide range of sustainability initiatives planned or underway. They include, for example, increasing the proportion of our car fleet which is hybrid or low carbon emitting; using Visy and other forms of recycling and the use of co-mingling bins; mulching; tree planting; green power; increased use of rainwater tanks and water reuse; sensor lighting; and waterless urinals.

At the same time UWS has a range of researchers and research centres committed to the sustainability agenda, including sustainability in an urban context; expertise which can be applied more systematically internally not just externally.

UWS has an opportunity to leverage, give focus to and highlight this work in a way that positions it favourably within and beyond Australia. Specifically, it can show it is leading the way in developing a sustainable campus in the Sydney Metropolitan area, by ‘practicing what it preaches’ in a strategic rather than an ad hoc way.

UWS is uniquely positioned compared with other Sydney Metropolitan universities because it already has so much land and can, for example, move towards carbon neutral performance quite rapidly.
