Influenza is present in the Australian community, both seasonal influenza and H1N1 Influenza 09 (human swine flu).
For the latest in advice visit the Australian Government Health Emergency website which contains details about protecting yourself and others.
Influenza Symptoms:
- Chills, shivering and fever (temperature over 38 degrees Celsius)
- Headache
- Muscle aches and pains
- Sore throat
- Stuffy or runny nose
- Sneezing
- Dry cough
- Tiredness
- Trouble breathing
If you display several of these symptoms, you should avoid contact with other people wherever possible and seek medical advice.
Influenza is highly contagious. If you do contract influenza, remain at home and do not return to work or study, until you are advised to do so.
Simple Hygiene Measures
Simple hygiene measures can help to limit the spread of influenza:
- Regularly wash your hands throughout the day, particularly after contact with others who may be unwell.
- Where you are not in the vicinity of soap and water please consider personal use of an alcohol-based hand sanitiser gel, commonly available for purchase from pharmacies and supermarkets.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
- Throw the tissue in a rubbish bin after you use it. Then wash your hands.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Limit personal contact (i.e. handshaking) where possible.
- Wipe flat or shared surfaces in your household or shared spaces with a disinfectant wipe regularly throughout the day. Disinfectant wipes are available for purchase from pharmacies or supermarkets.
- Practice personal hygiene in class rooms or at work and where there is shared preparation of food.
