The University of Western Sydney (UWS) Nanotechnology Network is an innovative attempt to transfer knowledge of the emerging opportunities in nanotechnology from UWS to industry, that has been functioning since 2003.
In 2006 the project, 'Nanotechnology Careers for the Future' built further links into industry, seeking to identify potential future careers for the current UWS B.Sc. (Nanotechnology) students, and raising awareness amongst secondary school students and science teachers of the opportunities from studying nanotechnology at UWS.
Through regular networking events and seminars, industry surveys and visits, public lectures, school visits and other communication strategies such as reports, newsletters and the Sci High DVD; and participation in relevant national and international conferences, the UWS Nanotechnology Network has maintained an active relationship with a wide variety of interested partners in business and industry, governments at all levels, the secondary school sector and the broader community.
In 2007 the “Diamond Anvil” Workshop was held with a number of key partners review and reinvigorate the Network. In 2008 Steering Committee, comprising of UWS academics and researchers, industry and government representatives, was formed to provide leadership in governance, focus and projects for the Network to enhance its effectiveness in meeting the needs of UWS and industry.
UWS also made a submission to the 2008 NSW Legislative Council Inquiry into Nanotechnology. The report from this Inquiry 'Nanotechnology in New South Wales' can be accessed below.
UWS has an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) which enhances the teaching and research capability of the project. The Ultra High Resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Imaging System with a magnetic field of 11.7 Teslas, arguably the best facility in Australia, at the UWS Campbelltown campus is also a significant teaching and research facility.
UWS Nanotechnology Network members formed a consortium that was successful in obtaining funding through the Ausindustry Industry Collaborative Innovation Program (ICIP) for the Nanottra Technology Roadmapping Project which explores the future of nanotechnology and the toolmaking industry. The Freedom Wheelchair is another example of Network participants collaborating to bring innovation to design, nanomaterials and manufacturing.
UWS Nanotechnology Network participants were instrumental in establishing the NSW Chapter of the Australian Nano Business Forum.
