Professor Alison Jones joins UWS

"There are many highly talented researchers and teachers at UWS and it will be an honour to work with them to achieve even greater success" Professor Alison Jones

Professor Jones joins UWS from the University of Newcastle, Australia, where she is currently Professor of Medicine and Clinical Toxicology within the School of Medicine and Public Health. She is an internationally recognised leader and educator in clinical toxicology and an active clinician

Foundation Dean of the UWS School of Medicine, Professor Neville Yeomans announced his plans for retirement earlier this year.

Professor Jones has a distinguished medical career. Prior to her role at the University of Newcastle, she spent eight years in several leadership positions, including Director of the National Poisons Information Service ( London), and Head of Medicine at London’s Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. UWS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid, said "Professor Jones will make an outstanding leader of the School of Medicine".

She was recently appointed as a director of the Australian StrategicPolicy Institute (ASPI), one of Australia’s premier research centres on strategic and defence policy issues. Professor Jones said she is honoured to be chosen as the next Dean of the UWS School of Medicine. “This Medical School was inspired by the aspirations of the people of Greater Western Sydney and serves a wonderfully diverse population,” she said.

The first UWS medical students will graduate at the end of 2011. Professor Jones said one of her greatest joys continues to be her daily interactions with students, and she is looking forward to meeting and getting to know the University's 300-strong medical student cohort as it grows in the years to come.
