The UWS Sensory Neuroscience Symposium is now an annual event on the Australian neuroscience calendar. Building on the existing research capacity within the School of Medicine at the University of Western Sydney, which includes research in the tactile and proprioceptive systems, and in vision, audition and pain, this symposium will draw experts from around Australia to discuss their latest findings in a relaxed setting that will foster discussion and, we hope, promote the establishment of new collaborations. In 2010 the inaugural UWS Sensory Neuroscience Symposium attracted over 160 registrants attending parallel sessions. This year we will not hold parallel sessions but will provide plenty of opportunities to network and discuss the findings of the speakers. Poster presentations are also encouraged. The Symposium opens with a Keynote Lecture on "The Roles for Tactile C Fibres in Pleasure and Pain" by Håkan Olausson, Professor of Clinical Neurophysiology at the University of Göteborg, Sweden. Prof Olausson will talk about a class of recently characterised unmyelinated cutaneous afferents that have low mechanical thresholds and are believed to play a role in affective touch. He will also talk about the potential roles of these non-nociceptive unmyelinated afferents in patients with large-fibre sensory neuropathy.
Location
The meeting will be held at the UWS School of Medicine, Australia's newest research-intensive Medical School. This is located on the Campbelltown campus, a 45 minute drive or 60 minute train ride from central Sydney.
Building 30, Goldsmith Avenue, Lecture Theatres 213 and 206, Campbelltown campus.
Program
The UWS Sensory Neuroscience Symposium includes 20 invited speakers from around Australia, presenting their latest work on tactile sensation and proprioception, visual and auditory neuroscience, the vestibular system and the chemical senses.
