Professor Ian Wilson has had a long career in general practice working in armed services, inner city, rural and urban practice. Throughout this time he has maintained a strong interest in medical education, including two terms with the RACGP vocational training programs, and extensive involvement with the RACGP examination. This culminated in two years as Censor-in-Chief. In 2005 he was appointed Foundation Professor of Medical Education in the new School of Medicine at the University of Western Sydney. He was the second academic appointed to the School and he had prime responsibility for developing and implementing the curriculum. Ian's philosophy has been to establish a Medical Education Unit that provides quality service to the medical course and is also a centre for high quality medical education research.

Bronwen DalzielDr Bronwen Dalziel

Dr Bronwen Dalziel works as a Senior Lecturer in the Medical Education Unit. She is the Year 2 Coordinator of the MBBS degree (as of 2011), and also coordinates the Scientific Streams for Years 3 to 5 (eLearning). Her current research focus is in Learning Design, particularly creating reusable templates for the development of content for online modules. Bronwen has a PhD (Science) from the University of Sydney, with research looking at genetic based differences in energy metabolism of obese people. Although Bronwen has moved out of a lab-based environment, she still has a firm interest in public education about obesity, childhood obesity and insulin resistance. Prior to starting at UWS, she worked for an eLearning company, LAMS International, developing online science lessons for K – 12 students in the UK, as well as running training courses on how to use the Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) software.

Dr Vicki Langendyk

Dr Vicki Langendyk has worked in medical education for over 10 years, having spent the first 15 years of her career in General Practice. The new School of Medicine at UWS is the third new medical programme Vicki has been involved in. She was a student in the early days of Newcastle Medical School, and went on to join a team of academics who oversaw the development and implementation of the new Graduate Medical Program at the University of Sydney in 1997.

Vicki teaches PBL, ethics and communication skills; and develops professionalism aspects of the curriculum. She completed a Masters in Education in 2005, and a Graduate Diploma in Philosophy in 2010. Vicki is now undertaking Honours in Philosophy at Macquarie University.

Janet ChanDr Janet Chan

Janet Chan is an Intensivist and Head of the ICU Simulation and Education Program at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. She joined the Medical Education Unit as Senior Lecturer in 2007 and has since been involved in the development of the curriculum in the areas of Clinical Skills and Critical Care. Her main research interest is in exploring the use of Simulation in Medical Education for both undergraduates and postgraduates. She has been invited to speak on Simulation at various national conferences and has also presented her work on Simulation in Critical Care internationally. In 2008 she was awarded a Commonwealth grant to develop a curriculum for non-technical skills for specialist trainees using Simulation; and a grant from the School of Medicine to evaluate teaching basic sciences to undergraduates using Simulation. This project commenced in 2010, commissioning the MEU's state-of-the-art 3G SimMan.

Mr David Harding

David is a Senior Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years experience in variety of government and private hospital settings. His clinical interests involve treatment for both children and adults experiencing depression, anxiety, as well as the spectrum of trauma-related psychological problems. He has been involved in the establishment of specialized treatment programs at a number of private hospitals. He also consults to the world’s largest disaster management company and has been deployed to a number of international incidents. He provides clinical supervision in various settings. David was the first PhD candidate in the School of Medicine and is researching medical student selection and professionalism.

Ms Eunice Gribbin

Eunice is an experienced nurse educator with a background in lecturing and clinical supervision of undergraduate nursing students in hospital and community settings. Her past clinical experience is in perioperative nursing with a focus on paediatrics. Eunice has completed a Masters in Health Law at the University of Sydney and has a keen interest in medico-legal aspects of health care. She co-founded the Bowel Group for Kids in 1995, which supports health professionals and families who care for children born with Hirschsprung’s disease or an Ano-rectal malformation. She is a PhD student at the School of Medicine ANU, researching the Role and Efficacy of Support Groups with a focus on paediatrics.

Dr Shaun Wang

Dr Shaoyu (Shaun) Wang has associated with the Medical Education Unit since 2008, with focus on teaching in PBL and also on participation in curriculum development and research activities. He holds B.VetMed. M.Sci. and Ph.D. Since completion of his undergraduate training in veterinary medicine, he has lectured anatomy, histology and physiology, and also tutored several subjects in biomedical sciences. At UWS, he has lectured Biodiversity to year 1 students. Shaoyu has research interests and activities in medical education, development of anticancer drugs, neurobiology and systems biology, which have resulted in peer-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations nationally and internationally. He welcomes any collaboration on teaching and research.

Lorena HoughMs Lorena Hough

Lorena joined the Medical Education Unit in 2007, just before the first student cohort arrived. She is a tutor for Medicine in Context, and coordinates and marks aspects of the Professional and Personal Development (PPD) part of the medical course. Lorena is also administrative coordinator for the non-clinical aspects of first-year MBBS.

Lorena  is a founding member of CAMERA, and has a strong interest in medical humanities. She recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education at ANU.

Marine LyeMs Marine Lye

Marine Lye is the Executive Assistant, Medical Education Unit. Marine joined the MEU in 2006, and her responsibilities include the provision of high level administrative support to Ian Wilson, Professor of Medical Education, assisting with the preparation of curriculum material, managing tutor timetabling and providing secretariat support to the School Academic Committee, Curriculum Committee, Assessment Committee and Evaluation Committee. Prior to joining the MEU, Marine worked in Area Drug Health Services at Sydney South West Area Health Service.

Melany SmithMs Melany Smith

Melany Smith is the Assessment & Evaluation Officer, Medical Education Unit at UWS. Melany joined the MEU in 2007. She is responsible for the coordination and management of all assessment and evaluations processes undertaken for the MBBS course. Prior to joining the MEU, Melany was with the School of Economics & Finance in the roles of SAC and Offshore Programs Finance Officer. Melany came to UWS from Telstra in 2003 where she was a Project/Finance Officer for commercial design and construction projects onshore and offshore.

Debbie worked for the School of Medicine Deanery before moving to the Medical Education Unit in 2008. She is the administrative coordinator of second-year MBBS, which includes attendance, tutor coordination, and online distribution of course material to students. Debbie is also Secretary to the Year 1 and 2 Committees.

Iman HegaziDr Iman Hegazi

Dr Iman Hegazi joined the Medical Education Unit in August 2009 as the new MEU PhD scholarship student. Iman was raised in Melbourne and completed her medical degree at the University of Alexandria, Egypt, where she also completed an MD in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology. She is interested in the psychosocial aspects of medical education. Her doctoral research will investigate the hidden curriculum in medical education.

Glenn Mason is an Educational Designer and is part of a joint UWS/Macquarie University team working on an ALTC-funded project on the development of online medical modules in the basic sciences for UWS medical students. He has a degree in Philosophy and an MSc in Computer Science and Natural Language Processing from the University of Essex (UK) and an MA in e-Learning from the University of Technology, Sydney. Prior to his current role, Glenn worked for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Sydney University on medical education projects. He has extensive experience in commercial web development including working for media organisations such as Forbes and Choice as a web and database programmer. His interests include online education, informal learning, critical pedagogy, curriculum design and various aspects of the medical humanities. He is currently investigating the effects of the digital divide on health outcomes as part of his PhD research at the School of Medicine, UWS.
