University of Western Sydney

Welcome

Professor John Ingleson
Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic and Enterprise

I am pleased to welcome all staff and students to participate in the inaugural UWS Learning and Teaching Week.

The University is committed to providing a contemporary education that builds successful lives and careers for our students and graduates. The importance of investigating the ways that we teach and learn and of integrating this knowledge and understanding into our teaching, is being increasingly recognised.

As several of the staff presenting have gained national recognition for the quality of their teaching, I encourage you to make the most of this opportunity to hear about a range of topics. These include: implementing the UWS Indigenous Graduate Attribute; innovative assessment ideas; emerging technologies; linking research with training; motivating students to engage; and applying for teaching awards.

I trust that your participation in Learning and Teaching Week will plant a seed for a growing interest in this area and stimulate ongoing conversations around how each of us can contribute to the creation of a superior student learning experience at UWS.

Professor Stuart Campbell
Pro Vice Chancellor (Learning and Teaching)

All staff and students are cordially invited to attend the inaugural UWS Learning and Teaching Week.

UWS Learning and Teaching Week includes a range of presentations each day and across all UWS campuses. Key presenters include senior UWS academic staff, teaching award-winners and Learning and Teaching Action Plan (LTAP) Project Leaders.

UWS Learning and Teaching Week is a valuable opportunity to celebrate and support staff achievements and positive developments in Learning and Teaching at UWS.

This inaugural event is intended to highlight the wonderful achievements of our teaching staff at UWS, to disseminate outcomes from many of the LTAP Projects funded in 2007 and 2008, and to showcase exciting new developments in teaching and learning practice at UWS.

Over the last two years, UWS has achieved remarkable outcomes at the national level in recognition of the quality of teaching at UWS. In 2007 and 2008, all 13 UWS nominations were successful in receiving an Australian Learning and Teaching Council citation for ‘Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning’.

This is an achievement that the University of Western Sydney can be proud of.

More than 80 academic staff members have been working on various LTAP projects aimed at improving learning and teaching within their schools and colleges. Three of the project leaders from these projects were recognised for Excellence in Teaching as part of the VC’s Excellence Awards in 2007.

For further information please contact Cherri Bracken, LTAP Project Officer, Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), via email c.bracken@uws.edu.au or phone    (02) 9678 7853  .
