Using threshold concepts to generate new meanings in the disciplines

Meyer and Land (2003) proposed that in many disciplines there are threshold concepts, which can be considered akin to passing through a conceptual gateway. Such concepts lead to a transformed way of understanding in the discipline which is irreversible and integrative. Threshold concepts offer the promise to academics in higher education to assist students who acquire formal knowledge and cannot use it and students who struggle with underpinning theory. This is a report on an ALTC competitive grants project.

While there are a few advanced techniques, most of them don't require special skills - only access to the right software.
