Communicating outside the classroom: Internet-mediated course communications
Blacktown 1-2pm, BL-U1.0-40
We examine the nature, characteristics and effectiveness of internet mediated course communications via an empirical investigation of the use made of the course website in a first year economics unit. Was this an effective way to enhance learning? Do foreign students use it more extensively, do females, do the weaker or stronger students?
Professor John Lodewijks
UWS lectures online
Parramatta 11am-12pm, PS-EA.2.13 (LT02)
UWS Lectures Online is a lecture capture system designed to record the audio and the visual presentations within an equipped lecture theatre. This system is being installed in the main lecture theatres across all campuses. These recordings can then be placed onto a vUWS site for student access. The session will cover general information about using this technology in 2009, hints from those who have participated in the pilot sessions in 2008 and examples of good practice.

Parramatta 12-1pm, PS-EA.2.13 (LT02)
This presentation describes a project which built an online learning guide and e‑learning community. This project can now be used as an exemplar to transfer competencies and protocols to units/schools within the college. (An LTAP project)

Using threshold concepts to generate new meanings in the disciplines
Werrington South 11am-12pm, WS-BBG13 (LT01)
Meyer and Land (2003) proposed that in many disciplines there are threshold concepts, which can be considered akin to passing through a conceptual gateway. Such concepts lead to a transformed way of understanding in the discipline which is irreversible and integrative. Threshold concepts offer the promise to academics in higher education to assist students who acquire formal knowledge and cannot use it and students who struggle with underpinning theory. This is a report on an ALTC competitive grants project.
Associate Professor Pauline Ross
A virtual lecture on virtual lectures - to be introducted by Assoc. Prof. Pauline Ross
Werrington South 12-1pm, WS-BBG15 (SR8)
This virtual lecture looks at some of the innovative ways technology can be used creatively in teaching. While there are a few advanced techniques, most of them don't require special skills - only access to the right software. Created by Dr Graeme Salter and introduced by Associate Professor Pauline Ross.
