Windows 7 is coming!

Windows 7 is coming to UWS in 2012. The initial rollout will be to the general purpose computer labs used by students, and fixed computers in teaching spaces. The rollout to staff will commence in the first quarter of 2012.

This page outlines our plans to move to Windows 7, Office 2010 and Internet Explorer 8. We will continue to provide more information as it becomes available and will update the frequently asked questions (FAQs) as we receive them. FAQ - All users

Why upgrade?

The University must update its software environment from time to time to keep pace with developments in applications, and changes made to hardware such as printers.

What are the differences between 64 bit Windows 7 and Vista?

• Users will notice very little difference between Vista and Windows 7.
• 64 bit Windows 7 allows our systems to use more than 3.2 GB of memory, improving performance and providing better support for specialist applications.
• There are some visual enhancements (eg, taskbar improvements).
• Microsoft provides more information on the features of Windows 7 compared with Windows Vista.(opens in a new window)

Can I use wireless with Windows 7?

Yes. AirUWS-Lite is configured to work with Windows 7 and many users are already using Windows 7 with the wireless network.

How do I change my password in Windows 7?

In the same way as before. To change your password, you will still use the MyUWSAccount process.

Will I still have access to my files and folders?

Yes. Your files and folders are in the same place as before.

Can I use my current software?

Generally, yes. However, some specialist applications (particularly very old versions) may not be compatible. All our core desktop applications have been successfully tested with Windows 7. Staff with particular queries should contact the Windows 7 team via: win7@uws.edu.au.

What version of Office is provided with Windows 7?

Office 2010, which includes:

What about Windows 8?

We are currently reviewing the beta version and do not have a timeline for a rollout at this stage.

FAQ - Students

When will the change occur?

The change has already happened. Rollout to the general purpose computer labs is complete.

What is affected?

From a student perspective, the main impact is that general purpose computer labs and fixed computers in teaching spaces will run Windows 7, 64 bit, in 2012.

How will the upgrade affect my access to UWS computer labs?

The general labs have reopened, and access to the labs is the same as it was before the rollout. You will still login using your MyUWSAccount credentials.

FAQ - Staff

Do I have to upgrade to Windows 7?

No, there is no need to upgrade to Windows 7.  At this time, both Windows Vista and Windows 7 will be running in parallel. Only new PCs will receive Windows 7 at this stage.

When will I get Windows 7?

New computers leased from early 2012 (perhaps as early as February), will be shipped with Windows 7 and Office 2010. If you require Microsoft Vista and Office 2007 instead, when placing your order, please explain why Windows 7 will not meet your specific requirements. 

How long will it take to upgrade to Windows 7?

This can vary from person to person, depending on the number and type of applications they have. Our testing has shown that most upgrades will take up to two hours before you're up and running.

My computer is not due to be replaced for a couple of years, can I upgrade to Windows 7 now?

Not at the moment. Once the rollout commences, our priority will be  providing Windows 7 for new computers. However, if you have a specific need for Windows 7 that cannot be met by your existing platform, please contact the Windows 7 team on win7@uws.edu.au with your requirements, and a business case for the request.
