Social Ecology at UWS explores the dynamic inter-relationships between the personal, social, environmental and ‘spiritual’ domains, particularly as these apply to learning and education. We acknowledge that everything we do as individuals affects others; our shared communities and environments. We view ourselves as parts of the systems (local to global) in which we live needing to take responsibility for our roles. Key themes include applied imagination, eco-psychology and cultural change, environmental education and advocacy, eco-literacy, systemics and the emergent characteristics of change, transformative learning, transformative leadership and associated research practices.
In our commitment to these themes, the social ecology team seeks to make a profound contribution through our undergraduate units in the Education Studies Major, and through our postgraduate programs.
Courses in Social Ecology are for those who want to lead understanding of the shifts in values and attitudes required to realise ecological, social and personal sustainability. It is for those seeking to orient learning towards our shared futures, imaginatively, collaboratively, ethically and effectively. It is for those seeking to both imagine and implement developments in the learning of future generations.
