CInIS Researcher at OECD in Paris

Dr Phillip Toner, Senior Research Fellow at CInIS, presented the findings of research commissioned by the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, France in May 2009.

Welcome to New CInIS Students

Three new Research Higher Degree candidates have commenced in CInIS recently.

They are Nick Scott, Mizan Rahman and Jacky Niu. More details about their study will be posted on this site shortly.

Success for CInIS Researchers

Mr Dash Forghani, Dr Prem Samaranayake and Associate Professor Anneke Fitzgerald together with Dr Kathryn Zeitz of the Royal Adelaide Hospital have been successful in obtaining a UWS Research Partnership Program grant to develop holistic criteria for evaluating the impact and benefits of the Patient Pathways program initiatives at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

CInIS Researchers' Success in Federal Government Grant

Dr Phillip Toner, Dr Richard Woolley and Professor Tim Turpin have been successful in obtaining a Federal Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) grant to investigate the "Role of Technicians and Tradespersons in Australian R&D Sites".

Dr Irene Ramos Vielba visiting CInIS

Dr Irene Ramos Vielba is visiting CInIS from 5th May 2009 to 31st August 2009. She is visiting from the Institute for Advanced Social Studies at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research in Cordoba, Spain and will be collaborating with Prof Tim Turpin and Dr Richard Woolley while here at UWS.

The purpose of the stay is to undertake research on university-industry collaborative linkages through CRCs and to complement the CInIS research program on the mobility of scientists and implications for innovation. The title of the work will be: "Knowledge transfer and professional career in university-industry collaborative research: the experience of CRCs in Australia".

"Brown Bag" Seminar series commenced

CInIS has announced a series of "brown bag" lunch time seminars to be held on the Parramatta Campus. The first seminar was held on Wednesday 8th April 2009 and the speaker was Dr Carolina Canibano from Universidad Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain.

Visiting Scholar at CInIS

Jelle Kooij from the University of Twente, The Netherlands, is visiting CInIS for ten weeks from 27th April 2009. Jelle will be working with Assoc Professor Anneke Fitzgerald on the ARC Linkage Grant "Visual Optimisation of Patient Flow in Hospital Emergency Departments". He will be completing the CT model as well as looking at the demand for tests and time delays from request to test.

We welcome Jelle who is replacing Martin de Bruin who has been here since March 2009.

European Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

Professor Ross Chapman was successful in obtaining a European Erasmus Mundus visiting professor scholarship in the Global Innovation Management (GIM) program from August - October 2009 in Denmark, Germany and Scotland. Erasmus Mundus (EM) is an EU funded program launched in 2004.

This program supports international mobility through the provision of funds for multinational course development, student travel and international experts to review and deliver specialist instruction within the designated EM Masters programs.

The GIM Masters degree is taught between three key centres - Aalborg University in Denmark, Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland and the Technical University of Hamburg, Germany. Involvement in this program will allow the potential to import the degree into UWS programs and build UWS-European exchange of Masters and Doctoral students under future EM programs.

PhD Candidates in CInIS heading towards completion

Congratulations to the following PhD candidates who have all submitted their theses to be examined:

Kathy Eljiz - "Who really matters: a mixed methods investigation into interoccupational and professional dynamics when managing patient flow"

Rayka Presbury - "Selection and Measurement of Quality Indicators in the Hotel Sector"

Dorothea Zakrzewski - "The Assessment of Privatization on the Performance of Airports in Australia"

Congratulations also to Eddie O'Mara who graduated with a PhD on 23rd April 2009. Eddie's thesis was entitled "Evaluating new product development performance in Small to Medium Sized Manufacturing Firms".

Visiting Scholar for the Centre for Industry and Innovation Studies

Marten de Bruin is visiting the Centre for Industry and innovation Studies (CInIS) from 2nd March until 8th May 2009. Marten is assisting on the project "Visual Optimisation of Patient Flow in Hospital Emergency Departments" with other researchers in CInIS. For this project, he is making a simulation model of the CT Department.

Marten is currently undertaking his Bachelor in Industrial Engineering and Management degree at the University of Twente (Enschede, The Netherlands). His main track is on Health Care Technology and Management.

Innovation Systems Research Workshop

The Centre for Industry and Innovation Studies (CInIS) held an interactive workshop on Innovation Systems Research on Tuesday 31st March 2009 at the Campbelltown Campus of UWS. The workshop included research leaders in innovation systems policy and practice from both Australia and overseas, including key participants in the recent Australian NIS Review. Professor Gerard Berendsen visits CInIS

Professor Gerard Berendsen of the Research Group Total Quality Management in Organisational Networks from HAN University, the Netherlands, and owner of Twente Quality Centre visited the Centre for Industry and Innovation Studies (CInIS) in February 2009. CInIS Student Shailen Muneshwar wins Scholarship

Mr Shailen Muneshwar has won a Research Training and Commercialisation Scholarship to be undertaken at UTS. Shailen is concurrently a PhD candidate in the Centre for Industry and Innovation Studies (CInIS) at University of Western Sydney. HisPhD topic is Organisational Innovation and Psychological Contracts.

Project on Visual Optimisation of Patient Flow wins funding

A team of CInIS researchers has won an ARC Linkage grant in the latest round.  The project title is Visual Optimisation of patient flow in Hospital Emergency Departments. The team comprises Dr Anneke Fitzgerald, Prof SJ Simoff, Assoc Prof Terry Sloan, Dr Prem Samaranayake, Mr Mark Johnston and Ms A Larkin. Read more.

Ane Lundgaard Jensen from Aalborg University, Denmark is in Australia from 4th August until December 2008 undertaking a foreign internship arranged through University of Western Sydney (UWS) and Penrith City Council. Read more

CInIS Student wins Travel Grant

Dilupa Nakandala, PhD Candidate in CInIS, has been awarded an international travel grant from SIDA< VINNOVA and from Aalborg University, Denmark, to present a paper at the 2008 GLOBELICS Conference in Mexico City, Mexico later this year. Read more
