Adjusting to university life

Thinking of dropping out?


The first few weeks of study can be daunting. Sometimes it's so overwhelming that students choose to drop out. There are a number of things you can do to make uni manageable. It's worth exploring these options before you make the decision to leave. Counsellors can give you helpful advice and support.

Advocacy


We can help you sort out academic, administrative and complaint issues. We can help with things like course transfers, making or defending a complaint, applying for a leave of absence, special consideration, review of grade and academic or non-academic misconduct.

Help and advice with administrative matters


We can help you apply for special consideration, review of grade, leave of absence, course transfers or withdrawing without academic penalty. Bring your form and any supporting documents to your appointment and we'll help you through the process.

Mediation


Counsellors can mediate discussions between you and another person or authority.

Campus Connection


'Campus Connection' is an interactive online forum. It is a place where you can connect with other UWS students, trade information and discuss ae range of issues. Email your student ID number to counselling@uws.edu.au to access Campus Connection.

Choice Matters


The Choice Matters program encourages students to make informed and responsible choices about drug and alcohol use. The program aims to:

  • educate students about the potential impact of alcohol on their lives and study
  • prevent an increase of alcohol use as first year students get into the 'swing' of university life
  • encourage and empower students to make smart and safe choices, such as not giving in to peer pressure
  • reduce the possible consequences of alcohol use. These may include sexual misconduct or poor academic performance
  • get a picture of current drinking patterns and outcomes for students
